Music and Video

If you need something to sort out your collection of MP3’s, record and edit music and watch or edit movies, then there should be something in this list that should be of interest to you. These aren’t only personal preferences, but have been rated by recognised sources around the internet. Click the images to go to the official sites.

WinampAlthough it’s more bloated than it used to be, Winamp is still a good player and is still worthy of a mention. The Media Library is always being improved, but some of the good TV channels aren’t on Shoutcast TV anymore :(

FoobarFoobar is a great alternative for those that want a basic no-frills audio player. It can be skinned and tweaked like other players, but if you want something that’s light on resources with nice and simple features, it’s ideal.

MediaMonkeyA good free program for sorting out your collection, renaming, tagging and whatnot is MediaMonkey. It may not be a great media player, but it works best as program that can put your MP3’s into categories so that you know what you have and where it is etc.

GOM Player is something new to me, I usually use Media Player ClassicGretech Online Movie player to play most of my video files, but GOM can play pretty much everything, if it can’t, then it will take you to a site where you can get the codec. It has plenty of settings to enhance the video that’s playing including a voice filter to enhance speech and the ability to de-interlace movies.

VirtualDubIf you’re into editing movies, you’ll want a program that’s known as the best AVI editor around, VirtualDub. Ask most people about what a good free editor is and VirtualDub will most likely be mentioned, it allows you to import mpg files, edit them and save as .avi which is better quality depending on the codec you use.

Don’t want to change mpg into avi? What about encoding avi into mpg?TMPGEnc That’s where TMPGEnc comes in handy as it’s a program that will let you convert avi files into mpg and even merge them together. It’s not an editor, it’s an encoder of avi files to mpg, if you’re looking for an mpg editor, keep reading…

MPEG StreamclipMPEG Streamclip is mainly a program that will convert QuickTime (.mov) files into mpg, but it does a whole lot more. You can stream YouTube and Google videos through it and more importantly, cut, copy, paste and trim files before exporting them.

A great program that’s highly recommended for editing and recordingAudacity audio is Audacity. Yet another program that will no doubt be mentioned when asking for this kind of program. It does pretty much everything you want an audio editor to do, I even converted an audio cassette using this program which is just one of its amazing features.

SUPERI’d forgotten about SUPER until not long ago when people had recommended it to me as a great free audio and video converter. It can convert between almost if not every codec you have installed and is better than other retail versions I’ve tried and even those have been separate programs, one to convert audio and one to convert video, this does both and most importantly, for free!
